About this network

Fundación InnovaT, based in Buenos Aires, operates InnovaRed — Argentina's national research and education network, connecting universities and research institutions to each other and to the wider academic internet.

What it's used for

• Backbone connectivity for Argentine universities and research institutes.
• International research links, letting Argentine academics reach peer NRENs and research networks abroad.
• Announcing the legacy 168.96.0.0/16 block long associated with Argentina's academic and scientific networking.

Notable

• A research and education network (NREN), not a commercial ISP. Its customers are institutions, so the traffic profile is academic rather than consumer.
• Like most NRENs it is comparatively small in address count but strategically central: a lot of a country's university traffic passes through one of these.

Interesting

• National research networks were often a country's first internet connection, which is why so many of them hold AS numbers this far down the range.
