AS6939 — HURRICANE

Network type: transit

AS6939 announces 508 IPv4 prefixes covering 394,240 addresses and 171 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

Hurricane Electric (HE) is a large global IP transit and colocation provider, especially well known for its enormous IPv6 footprint and free tunnel service.

What it's used for

• Providing IP transit and peering to networks, data centers, and hosting providers worldwide.
• Operating the popular tunnelbroker.net free IPv6 tunnel service and the bgp.he.net looking glass / network research portal.

Notable

• HE peers at an exceptionally large number of internet exchanges and often appears as a hop in traceroutes even when neither endpoint is its customer.
• Its rDNS names encode PoP locations (e.g. ...core1.lax1.he.net), which makes HE routers useful landmarks for geolocating a network path.

Interesting

• HE has long run public campaigns to push IPv6 adoption, including a free IPv6 certification program.
