About this network

niks is the National Research Computer Network of Russia, registered to the Scientific Research Institute for System Analysis of the National Research Centre "Kurchatov Institute" in Moscow.

What it's used for

• Backbone connectivity for Russia's research and education community: universities, Academy of Sciences institutes, and national research centres.
• Linking supercomputer centres that make up the country's national supercomputing infrastructure.

Notable

• NIKS holds the formal status of Russia's National Research and Education Network (NREN), so this is academic infrastructure rather than a commercial ISP.
• It carries a large block of address space for a research network, reflecting a national-scale membership rather than a single campus.

Interesting

• NIKS peers with the pan-European research network GÉANT and interconnects with NORDUnet, the Nordic research network, giving Russian institutions a path into the international R&E networking fabric.
