About this network
AS9877 (NGEEANN-POLY-AS-AP) is held by the Ngee Ann Polytechnic Computer Centre. Ngee Ann is one of Singapore's five polytechnics, a large post-secondary institution on Clementi Road offering diploma programmes to tens of thousands of students and alumni.
What it's used for
This is a single-campus institutional network. RIS sees just 5 IPv4 prefixes carrying 65,536 addresses and no IPv6, with only 2 observed BGP neighbours. Almost all of that address count is one object: 153.20.0.0/16, a legacy class-B block registered to the polytechnic as NPNET-SG, announced alongside four more-specific /24s carved out of it (153.20.24.0/24, 153.20.78.0/24, 153.20.93.0/24, 153.20.117.0/24). Announcing more-specifics of your own aggregate is normally done to steer traffic for particular subnets across different upstreams, or to protect them from hijack; with two neighbours, the former is the likely motive. Two neighbours also confirms the role — the polytechnic buys connectivity, it does not sell any, and its AS exists so it can multi-home rather than to provide transit to anyone else.
Notable
- A full /16 for one campus is a striking amount of address space by modern standards. It is an artifact of the era in which it was allocated, not of current need — an institution applying today would receive a small fraction of it.
- The AS is registered to the institution's Computer Centre specifically, which is the campus IT department; the network fronts university-owned lab, staff and student-facing systems rather than any commercial hosting.
