About this network

AS9493 (SHS-AS) is registered to HMC SECURITIES CO., LTD. — the Korean brokerage that trades today as Hyundai Motor Securities, an affiliate of the Hyundai Motor Group. The registry record is a snapshot of an older name: the firm was HMC Investment Securities until it renamed to Hyundai Motor Securities in 2018. The SHS in the handle is older still, matching the brokerage's original identity as Shinheung Securities before Hyundai acquired it in 2008.

What it's used for

This is a brokerage's own network. The AS originates 2 IPv4 prefixes totalling 512 addresses — 203.227.19.0/24 and 218.237.111.0/24, one from legacy Korean space and one from later-issued space — and no IPv6.

Three observed BGP neighbours against 512 addresses is the classic multihomed-enterprise shape, and for a securities firm it is close to mandatory. Trading, order routing and customer-facing platforms cannot tolerate a single upstream failure, so the firm runs its own ASN and takes several transit paths purely to keep a fixed, provider-independent set of addresses reachable. Nothing in the routing suggests hosting, transit or any third-party service: two /24s, no aggregate to sub-delegate, no downstream ASes.

Notable

• The AS is a good example of registry lag: the handle records a company name from before 2008, the holder record one from before 2018, and neither matches the brand the business uses now. Read the routing and the corporate record together, not the handle.
• Financial-sector ASNs like this one are consistently small in address terms and disproportionately multihomed — availability, not capacity, is what the ASN buys them.
