About this network

The statewide University of Alaska system (ALASKA), whose flagship campuses are in Fairbanks, Anchorage and Juneau.

What it's used for

• Campus, research and administrative networking for the University of Alaska.
• Announces the legacy 137.229.0.0/16 block, historically the University of Alaska Fairbanks network, plus a /18 of provider-independent space.

Notable

• The handle ALASKA is a trap: this is the university system, not Alaska Communications, the state's incumbent telco, which holds AS7782. Addresses here are institutional, not consumer broadband.
• Registered with ARIN in January 1997, and the /16 predates that — typical of a university that connected early and kept its class-B assignment.

Interesting

• Alaska's geography makes university networking unusually infrastructure-heavy: the system links campuses and research sites spread across a state larger than the next three combined, and supports Arctic and geophysical research programs.
