About this network

UIC-AS is the campus network of the University of Illinois Chicago, a large public research university and the state's largest university in the Chicago area. Registered to UIC's technology organisation on West Taylor Street.

What it's used for

• Campus, research, medical-centre and administrative networking for UIC, including its health-sciences colleges and hospital.
• Announces two full legacy /16s — 128.248.0.0/16 and 131.193.0.0/16 — giving it roughly 131,000 IPv4 addresses, plus IPv6.

Notable

• Two Class-B-era /16s is a distinctly institutional footprint: universities that connected early were routinely given whole /16s, and many still hold them. A modern network of UIC's size would never be issued that much space today.
• UIC is also a research network participant, so a share of the space carries research and high-performance-computing traffic rather than ordinary campus users.

Interesting

• Chicago has a dense cluster of low-numbered academic ASNs; UIC's sits close to other mid-1990s university registrations in the same range.
