About this network

UPSTEL-NET is the network of the Upsala Co-operative Telephone Association, a member-owned rural telephone cooperative in Upsala, Minnesota, which delivers internet and phone service under the Sytek brand.

What it's used for

• Residential and small-business broadband and telephone service in central Minnesota, including Morrison, Stearns, and Todd counties.
• Fiber-to-the-premises service built out with USDA Rural Development support.

Notable

• Eyeball address space serving a small rural subscriber base — a handful of /22s rather than the large pools a metro ISP would need.
• A cooperative, not a commercial carrier: it is owned by the subscribers it serves.

Interesting

• The co-op traces its telephone service back to 1907, making it far older than the internet it now carries. Rural telephone cooperatives like this one are a recurring feature at the low end of the ASN space, having connected early and never given the number back.
