About this network

Three companies across three fields, and every address answers to the word for not knowing.

What it's used for

• A search company's network. One IPv4 prefix announced from the United States, no IPv6, two hundred and fifty-six addresses, through one observed BGP neighbour.

Notable

• The AS handle is a search engine brand that stopped operating long ago. The holder field is the company that ended up owning it. The netname is a third company again, one that was bought by the second.
• That netname is the third brand, three letters for a block, and a numeral, so it also implies five earlier blocks under the same scheme.
• All three queried addresses answered, and all three gave the same name: the word for something unidentified, on the holder's domain. No address here has a name of its own.
• The block is the smallest routable size, behind one observed neighbour.

Interesting

• A wildcard reverse name saying the address is unknown answers a question the operator would rather not answer precisely. It confirms the domain, refuses the detail, and keeps the lookup from failing outright.
• Three brands in one record is a fossil record of acquisitions read in order: the engine, the company that bought the infrastructure behind it, and the company that bought them both. Nothing in the registry says they are related; the dates and the addresses do.
• One block and one upstream is what remains of a name that once carried a large share of the web's searches.
