About this network

Four blocks, three institutional names, and one of them is a placeholder maintained by the registry itself.

What it's used for

• A national laboratory's network. Five prefixes announced from the United States, one of them IPv6, nine thousand two hundred and sixteen addresses, through one observed BGP neighbour.

Notable

• The AS handle is the laboratory's acronym, the letters for an autonomous system, and then the full name spelled out in four hyphenated words. It is the longest handle in this range.
• Two blocks are registered to an institute for solar energy research, the laboratory's own earlier name, and their netnames are that institute's initials, one bare and one with a numeral.
• One block is registered to a name that describes the laboratory by region rather than by mission, and no other field uses it.
• The fourth block is registered to a placeholder string naming several registries at once, with a note that the registry maintains it. Its netname is the word for a network and the first number of the range.
• Twelve addresses were queried for reverse DNS and none returned a name.

Interesting

• A laboratory that changed its name kept the old one in the registry, because renaming an allocation means filing paperwork that nothing forces you to file. Two blocks here are still held by an institute that stopped existing under that name decades ago.
• A registry-maintained placeholder in a live network is address space from the era before allocations had owners in the modern sense. Somebody is using it; the record no longer says who.
