AS16108 — Deutsches Institut fuer Normung

AS16108 announces 4 IPv4 prefixes covering 3,840 addresses and 1 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

The body that writes standards holds four blocks in a neat descending ladder, and lists no abuse contact at all.

What it's used for

• A standards institute's network. Four IPv4 prefixes and one IPv6 block announced from Germany, three thousand eight hundred and forty addresses, through two observed BGP neighbours.

Notable

• All four IPv4 blocks sit in one contiguous stretch of address space, and each is half the size of the one before it, from the largest down to a single smallest-routable block.
• Every block carries the same three-letter netname, the initials of the institute, with no country code and no date.
• The holder field spells the institute's name out in full including its legal form; the AS handle is the same words with that form dropped, so the two differ only by the last three characters.
• The second contact on every block is a hostmaster role belonging to a telecoms provider, and there is no abuse contact anywhere in the record.
• Twelve addresses were queried for reverse DNS and none returned a name.

Interesting

• A descending ladder of block sizes is what happens when one large range is subdivided rather than when four separate requests are granted. The pieces are contiguous, so they were carved from a single original allocation.
• An institute whose whole purpose is writing down how things should be documented has left its own registry entry with three letters and no contact for problems, which is a pleasing kind of irony.
