AS15601 — Baring Investment Services

AS15601 announces 1 IPv4 prefixes covering 65,536 addresses and 0 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

An entire /16 announced as one route, with nothing answering inside it.

What it's used for

• An investment firm's network. One IPv4 /16 announced from the United Kingdom, no IPv6, sixty-five thousand addresses, through two observed BGP neighbours.

Notable

• The whole holding is a single /16, announced complete, with no more specific pieces broken out of it anywhere.
• The block's netname ends in a shortened form of the word management with an extra letter on the end, a typing slip preserved in the registry.
• The registrant company name differs from the holder name: one is the asset management arm, the other the investment services one.
• Two neighbours carry sixty-five thousand addresses.
• Three addresses were queried for reverse DNS and none returned a name.

Interesting

• Sixty-five thousand addresses for one firm is an allocation from the era when a large organisation simply asked for a /16 and received one. Nothing since has made them give any of it back.
• Announcing it whole, with no fragments, means the entire estate sits behind one routing decision. That is unusual at this size and much tidier than most networks manage.
• A typo in a netname is permanent in a way few other records are. It will be quoted in filters and documentation for as long as the block is used.
