AS15178 — -Reserved AS-

AS15178 announces 1 IPv4 prefixes covering 256 addresses and 0 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

The registry calls this AS number reserved, and it is announcing a route anyway.

What it's used for

• A single IPv4 /24 announced through one observed BGP neighbour. The block is registered to a cloud communications provider.

Notable

• The AS handle is the literal string -Reserved AS-, a placeholder rather than a name.
• The lookup for the holder failed, so nothing can be said about who the number is assigned to.
• The country of the announced block is unknown in the inventory, so even its geography is unrecorded.
• The block's netname combines the registrant's name, its corporate form and the third octet of the address, and the registrant is written with a trailing period.
• One of three sampled addresses answered, and the name is a mail host under the domain of an organisation unrelated to the registrant.

Interesting

• A reserved handle on an announcing AS number is a contradiction between two systems that never check each other. Routing accepts the number because a neighbour vouches for it; the registry describes it as unallocated because nobody updated the record when it was put to use.
• The one reverse name gives away more than the whole registry does. It names a tenant, which places the block in a hosted mail environment and tells you what the provider is selling here.
• Two hundred and fifty-six addresses and one upstream is the smallest possible arrangement, and it is not the sort of network anyone would expect to hold an AS number in the fifteen-thousand range.
