AS14950 — LHM-GROUP - Larry H. Miller Dealerships

AS14950 announces 1 IPv4 prefixes covering 256 addresses and 0 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

A dealership group's whole network record reduced to three letters.

What it's used for

• A car dealership group's network. 256 addresses in a single IPv4 prefix, with two observed BGP neighbours and no IPv6 announced.

Notable

• The whole footprint is 198.235.130.0/24, carrying the netname LHM.
• Those three letters are the founder's initials, and they are the entire netname.
• The AS handle adds one word to the same three letters.
• Three addresses were queried for reverse DNS and none returned a name.

Interesting

• Initials alone make a netname that is unambiguous to the company and meaningless to everyone else. It is the shortest form a name field can take while still being a name, and it will never be found by anybody searching for the business.
• Dealership groups run finance and insurance desks alongside the showroom, which means credit applications and identity documents for every buyer pass through systems reached from a network this size.
• Two upstreams for a single block gives the group a second path without a second block, which is the cheaper half of redundancy and the half that matters most day to day.
• Holding the space under its own name rather than a carrier's is unusual at this size and means the addresses stay with the business if the providers change.
