AS14881 — NMG-1

AS14881 announces 1 IPv4 prefixes covering 512 addresses and 0 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

A luxury retailer announcing a data centre company's addresses, under that company's previous name.

What it's used for

• A department store group's network. 512 addresses in a single IPv4 prefix, with one observed BGP neighbour and no IPv6 announced.

Notable

• The whole footprint is 216.150.206.0/23, carrying the netname VIAWEST-BLK-5.
• That block is registered to Flexential Colorado Corp., a colocation provider, not to the retailer.
• The netname is the provider's earlier brand, kept after the rename.
• Three addresses were queried for reverse DNS and none returned a name.

Interesting

• Nothing in the address registry connects these addresses to the retailer. The only public assertion that the two are related is the routing itself, which is a fair description of what colocation is: the building, the power and the addresses belong to somebody else, and the equipment inside the cage belongs to you.
• The netname preserving the provider's old brand while the registrant carries the new one is the same pattern seen across this range, and it is why netnames are a better guide to a company's history than to its present.
• A retailer with one upstream and no address space of its own is running this AS for a specific purpose rather than as its main network. The customer-facing storefront of a chain this size lives with a delivery provider.
• Nothing published in reverse DNS keeps whatever is in that cage unidentified, which is the right choice.
