AS14844 — CITY-OF-KILLEEN-TX-01

AS14844 announces 1 IPv4 prefixes covering 256 addresses and 0 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

The carrier's netname points at a block this city does not hold.

What it's used for

• A municipal government's network. 256 addresses in a single IPv4 prefix, with two observed BGP neighbours and no IPv6 announced.

Notable

• The whole footprint is 65.126.78.0/24, carrying the netname CENTURYLINK-LEGACY-QWEST-65-112-0 and registered to the carrier.
• The address embedded in that netname is not this block's address.
• All three sampled addresses answer under killeentexas.gov, in the form 65-126-78-64.killeentexas.gov.
• The AS handle and the holder record are the same string, naming the city, its state and a counter.

Interesting

• The netname records two corporate generations of the same carrier and then names a parent range that this block sits inside rather than the block itself. Assignments made out of a larger legacy allocation inherit its label, so the number in the name describes the paperwork rather than the addresses.
• Against that, the reverse DNS is the city's own, on a government domain, so the same addresses present as municipal in one system and as carrier legacy space in another.
• Two upstreams for a city network covers the services residents reach directly along with the ones staff depend on internally.
• The counter on the handle implies the city registered more than one entry.
