AS13440 announces 3 IPv4 prefixes covering 768 addresses and 0 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

A carrier's autonomous system whose every announced address answers under the national tax authority's domain.

What it's used for

• A Mexican carrier's network. 768 addresses across three IPv4 prefixes, one observed BGP neighbour, and no IPv6 announced.

Notable

• All nine sampled addresses resolved, every one of them under sat.gob.mx.
• Names include atnvl.plataforma.sat.gob.mx, mx11.sat.gob.mx and movil.sat.gob.mx.
• ip127.sat.gob.mx answers for an address in all three blocks, and ip190.sat.gob.mx for two.
• Netnames are the address ranges written out, and all three are registered to the carrier.

Interesting

• The registry says a telecommunications company and DNS says a government agency. The carrier holds the space and the agency uses it, which is how a large customer with strict requirements ends up invisible in the registry and unmistakable in DNS.
• Names of the form ip plus a number are generated from the last octet alone, so the same name repeats in every block. Anything that assumes a reverse name identifies one host will get this wrong three times over.
• Alongside those generated names sit real ones for a platform, a mail host and a mobile service. The zone is half automatic and half maintained, and the maintained half is the part somebody cares about.
