AS13040 — ASN-FIZ

AS13040 announces 1 IPv4 prefixes covering 65,536 addresses and 0 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

A full /16 announced as a single prefix, held by an institute for scientific information.

What it's used for

• The network of a German research institute for information infrastructure. 65,536 addresses in one IPv4 prefix, two observed BGP neighbours, and no IPv6 announced.

Notable

• The entire inventory is 141.66.0.0/16, netname FIZLAN.
• Two observed BGP neighbours.
• First observed in the routing archive in October 2000.
• Three addresses were sampled and none returned a name.

Interesting

• One announcement covering the whole allocation is unusual once a network passes a few thousand addresses. Most holders this size split their space to steer traffic between upstreams or to separate sites. Announcing the /16 whole says the network is run as one place with one policy.
• FIZLAN names the block a local area network, which is what a /16 was expected to be when this space was allocated. Sixty-five thousand addresses on one site was a reasonable planning assumption then and would be an extraordinary one now.
• Nothing answered a reverse lookup across the sample. Research institutes tend to publish names for their public services and leave the rest of the range dark, and with only three addresses tested the sample never reached the populated part.
• Two neighbours for a research network is the signature of connecting through a national academic backbone rather than buying commercial transit.
