AS12945 — GAMEPOINT Gamepoint autonomous system

AS12945 announces 2 IPv4 prefixes covering 512 addresses and 1 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

An online games company on 512 addresses, with an AS handle that explains what an AS is.

What it's used for

• The network of a Dutch online games operator. 512 addresses across two IPv4 prefixes, one IPv6 prefix, and three observed BGP neighbours.

Notable

• The inventory is 91.212.176.0/24 and 194.126.241.0/24, plus 2001:67c:2e20::/48.
• Both IPv4 blocks carry the same netname, GAMEPOINT.
• The AS handle is GAMEPOINT Gamepoint autonomous system.
• One of six sampled addresses returned a name: game6.gamepoint.net.

Interesting

• The handle repeats the company name and then explains the concept. Whoever filled the form wrote a description of the object rather than a label for it, and the phrase is now what routing tools display. It is the second such handle in this range, which suggests the field's purpose has never been obvious to the people asked to fill it.
• game6 implies at least five siblings. Numbering game servers sequentially is the oldest pattern in multiplayer hosting, from when each server was a machine with a fixed capacity and players chose which one to join by name.
• The IPv6 prefix is a /48 from a range the regional registry uses for its own assignments rather than for ordinary provider allocations. A /48 is the size given to a single site, so this is one location's worth of address space obtained through a different route than the IPv4 blocks were.
• Two /24s from ranges twenty years apart in allocation history, for a company whose entire network fits in 512 addresses.
