AS12917 — GLOBALLOGIC

AS12917 announces 1 IPv4 prefixes covering 256 addresses and 0 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

A software engineering office on 256 addresses, with its provider holding the paperwork.

What it's used for

• The network of a software engineering company's Slovak office. 256 addresses in one IPv4 prefix, a single observed BGP neighbour, and no IPv6 announced.

Notable

• The whole inventory is 85.159.107.0/24, netname NET-GlobalLogic.
• The block's registrant contact belongs to a different company's network administration team.
• The AS handle drops the country and legal suffix the AS name carries.
• First observed in the routing archive in August 2000.
• Three addresses were sampled and none returned a name.

Interesting

• The netname is the customer's name, the contact is the provider's. This is provider-assigned space: the block belongs to the internet provider, is labelled for whoever is using it, and stays behind when the customer leaves. An AS number is portable, address space obtained this way is not, and the two travel together only as long as the contract lasts.
• One neighbour and 256 addresses is the smallest meaningful shape a network can have while still running BGP. The reason to bother is usually that a parent company standardises on it, so every office announces its own space regardless of size.
• A first appearance in 2000 for a company whose current name and structure came much later. AS numbers get reassigned, and the routing archive records when the number started being announced rather than anything about who is announcing it now. Age in this data is a property of the identifier, not of the organisation holding it.
