AS12729 — HSBC_TR_BANK_INTERNET

AS12729 announces 1 IPv4 prefixes covering 8,192 addresses and 0 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

Every block still filed under the name of a bank that no longer exists.

What it's used for

• Corporate and internet banking networks in Turkey. 8,192 addresses in three IPv4 prefixes, two observed BGP neighbours, and no IPv6 announced.

Notable

• All three prefixes carry the netname TR-DEMIRBANK-19991028, a name that is not the holder's.
• The registrant on each is HSBC Bank Anonim Sirketi.
• The three blocks are contiguous: 212.127.96.0/21, 212.127.104.0/21 and 212.127.112.0/20 sit end to end.
• Nine sampled addresses were queried and none returned a name.

Interesting

• October 1999 is the date on the registration, and the name on it belongs to the bank that filed it. What the record shows is that address space changed hands with the institution and nobody ever renamed it, so the registry still answers a question about ownership with an answer about history.
• Three contiguous blocks announced separately, adding to a single /19-shaped range, is aggregation left undone. One announcement would carry the same traffic and cost every router two fewer entries; three is what you get when each piece was turned up at a different time and nothing forced a tidy-up.
• The AS handle spells out BANKINTERNET, which is the network's job description. Retail banking has one externally reachable function, and naming the AS after it is honest in a way that most corporate handles are not.
