AS12651 — IPWORLDCOM Switzerland

AS12651 announces 2 IPv4 prefixes covering 32,768 addresses and 1 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

Two /18s and 32,768 addresses, not one of which answered to a name.

What it's used for

• Connectivity in Switzerland. 32,768 addresses in two IPv4 prefixes, one IPv6 prefix, and two observed BGP neighbours.

Notable

• 212.74.128.0/18 is netname CH-IPWORLDCOM-981202; 83.172.192.0/18 is CH-IPWORLDCOM-20040506.
• Each /18 holds 16,384 addresses, and there is nothing else.
• The IPv6 announcement is 2a10:cf00::/29, out of a range the registry opened recently.
• Six sampled addresses were queried and none returned a name.

Interesting

• Two blocks of identical size, six years apart, with nothing between them and nothing since in IPv4. That is a network that grew once, in one step, and then stopped needing addresses. The December 1998 date on the first puts it among the older registrations in this stretch of the number range.
• The IPv6 block tells a different story. A 2a10:: allocation is recent, which means this network came back to the registry decades after its last IPv4 request and took a full /29. The IPv4 side is frozen and the IPv6 side is new.
• Thirty-two thousand addresses and no reverse names on any sample is a large amount of space with no outward-facing services in the sampled parts of it. Addresses can sit announced and unused for years; announcement proves reachability, not occupancy.
