AS12093 — UWATERLOO

AS12093 announces 2 IPv4 prefixes covering 65,792 addresses and 1 IPv6 prefixes.

About this network

The campus network of the University of Waterloo in Ontario.

What it's used for

• Campus networking for teaching and research. The sampled reverse DNS answers under nsx.uwaterloo.ca with per-building names, the shape of a campus addressing plan organised by physical location rather than by service.

Notable

• Almost the entire announcement is a single legacy 129.97.0.0/16 registered as UWATERLOO-V4. Two IPv4 prefixes and three observed BGP neighbours make this about as simple as a large network gets: one class B, a couple of upstreams, no fragmentation.
• One /24 is registered to an independent computer consultant rather than to the university, so a small piece of unrelated space rides along inside the campus announcement.

Interesting

• Waterloo is the Canadian university most closely tied to the country's tech industry, and it was on the internet early enough to hold a class B outright. Canadian institutions drew from the same early allocation pool as their US counterparts, which is why a single campus here holds 65,000 addresses while a comparable university founded a decade later would be renting them.
